10 Things #6
What was I thinking?

(reading time: 2 min.)

Hi! Wendy here. I was contemplating what The Underbelly’s 10 Things is becoming, and it occurred to me that if it were I receiving it, I would much prefer to open something like this on a Sunday morning around 10am.
Anyone else feel this way?

  1. TWIL (This Week I Learned.)

This week I learned to observe. Just observe, hold off on judgment, and let stuff go. From taking in the exquisite healing pain of dry needling to my decision to finally vanquish my inability to even smell whiskey — I won! — this was a week of observation and “maintaining a curious stance”.

  2. Quote

“To put it simply, we’re becoming jerks and prematurely aging ourselves. Burnout and exhaustion, Aschwanden says, prevent us from being present, tuning into the needs of our own bodies, and enjoying the people around us. Relying on technology like sleep-tracking apps may only stress us out more. “You’ll become one of those people road-raging on the way to yoga class,” she says.” — Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix, writing in Outside.

  3. Prompt

“We’re becoming jerks and prematurely aging ourselves”
    Here’s a prompt:
”I feel most human when I am ______________”

  4. Quest

Florence Williams writes that the antidote to burnout is walking in nature. Without calculating the number of steps, or caring how fast you’re moving. Just walking, meandering, in nature.
    So go do that.

  5. Wayback

  9. Hero: Tao Porchon-Lynch, World’s oldest yoga instructor.
Why? Her motto: “There is nothing you cannot do.”
Her living example of doing & being:

    • Tao’s teachers are the Who’s Who of the Yoga World from Swami Prahhavananda and The Maharishi to Indra DeviB.K.S. Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois.

    • In addition to marching with Gandhi (twice), Tao worked in the French Resistance under General Charles de Gaulle

    • Tao modeled for famous design houses including Jean Dessès, Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Marcel Rochas, Jean Patou and Elsa Schiaparelli. She was voted “Longest Legs in Europe.”

    • Tao performed in theatre and was under contract with MGM – in films with icons such as Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Hope. She also wrote and produced, and was early in international film distribution.

    • Tao is a wine connoisseur. She published Beverage Communicator – one of the first three wine appreciation newspapers in the U.S. – and was a co-founder of the American Wine Society.

    • At age 87, Tao became a ballroom dancer and has won over 700 First Place Awards.

    • At 101 years old, she’s a role model for CI (continuous improvement)
